These three Cds record the repertoire of John Short–-a.k.a Yankee Jack–-of Wachet, Somerset in England’s West Country, who, in 1914 gave the folksong collector Cecil Sharp nearly 60 shanties, several in early rare versions. John spent over 50 years working in sailing boats, much of his younger days in deep-water ships, sailing all around the world as a shantyman. In Sharp’s words, “…It would be difficult, I imagine, to find a more experienced exponent of the art of chantey-singing…”
The CDs feature an all star crew of modern shanty singers: Roger Watson, Sam Lee, Jeff Warner, Jackie Oates, Tom Brown, Keith Kendrick, Jim Mageean and Barbara Brown .
